The rose is a common motif in the art of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), an artist known for his surrealist style and technical skill. His 1958 painting The Meditative Rose features a perfect representation of the flower, a departure from the exaggerated and abstracted objects of his more typical style. Yet this work is still imbued with surrealism, as the intricately-rendered giant rose looms with an otherworldly glow, suspended above an ambiguous, sparse landscape traversed by two small figures. Contrasted against the seemingly dry land below, a single droplet of water on the rose’s lowest petal enhances its mystery, encouraging a meditative contemplation.
