Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a French Impressionist painter well known for his paintings of the upper-class in candid moments full of saturated color. Dance at Bougival (1883) captures a scene from a suburban café, focused on the embrace of two dancers. Their close proximity and flushed cheeks give a subtle sensuous touch to the painting. As Renoir’s parents were a dressmaker and a tailor, he often enjoyed rendering the intricate details of contemporary fashions, seen here with the woman’s hat decorated with flowers and fruits, and the ruffles of her skirt.
