Vincent van Gogh has become a well-known figure in popular culture that embodies the idea of the “tortured artist.” While he is now considered one the most famous and important modern artists, he was not commercially successful in his own lifetime and was plagued with depression. The infamous story of him gifting a portion of his left ear to his love interest at the time helped propel the artist into posthumous fame, creating the persona of the artist we know today.
