Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a French Impressionist painter well known for his paintings of the upper-class in candid moments full of saturated color. His painting Two Sisters (On the Terrace) (1881) is one such work, depicting a young woman with her younger sister seated on an outdoor terrace on a spring day. Renoir’s bold brushstrokes of vibrant color beautifully capture the basket of yarn on their lap, the delicate flowers on their clothing, and the foliage of the Seine River behind them. Its subject matter and masterful treatment of light make the painting a celebration of youthfulness and hope.
