Hieronymus Bosch, an Early Netherlandish painter, is renowned for his complex and enigmatic triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (c. 1490–1500). Housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939, this masterwork juxtaposes a fantastical Eden with a nightmarish hellscape. In the rightmost panel, Bosch's hell teems with grotesque figures and surreal torments that reflect moral and religious anxieties of his time. The bizarre and often disturbing imagery serves as a caution against the excess and sin depicted in the central panel of earthly pleasures. Bosch's intricate detail and use of luminous colors created a chilling vision of damnation that continues to intrigue and puzzle art historians. The work’s hallucinogenic quality and profound symbolism prefigure themes explored much later by Surrealist artists, establishing Bosch as an artist ahead of his time and "The Garden of Earthly Delights" as a seminal piece in Western art history.
