Discobolus, or discus thrower, is one of the most iconic works of classical antiquity. The Greek original (460-450 BCE), created in bronze by Myron (active c.480-440 BCE), was lost, and the work is known instead through the many bronze and marble Roman copies. The sculpture depicts a young male athlete frozen in the act of throwing a disk. Despite the action of his movement, the body and face remain calm and relaxed, perhaps suggesting that the figure is in a completely clear state of mind, in total control of his form, creating a representation of a true athletic ideal.
