In 1880, the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1885-1917) received a commission for a pair of bronze doors for a new museum in Paris. Rodin worked on the commission for over 30 years, but the museum was never completed and the door was never fully finished. Yet his incredible The Gates of Hell was posthumously cast in bronze and became a defining work for the sculptor’s legacy. The sculpture depicts a scene from the Inferno section of Dante’s Divine Comedy and features over 200 figures entangled within an ungrounded representational space.
