Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482) was a highly esteemed public figure during the Italian Renaissance, known for his patronage of the arts. He was painted by the artist Piero della Francesca in a double portrait often titled The Duke and Duchess of Urbino (c. 1465-72), which shows Federico facing his wife, Battista Sforza, to memorialize her death. Depicted in profile, their portraits loom against the expansive landscape in the background, symbolic of the land that they ruled over. The painting remains one of the most famous works of Italian Renaissance art.
